This is the Diaoya Cliff in Hefeng County, Enshi, Hubei Province. In the 1970s, to build a road out of the mountains, locals carved this road entirely by hand on this sheer cliff. Without heavy machinery, only steel chisels, sledgehammers, and manual labor, the road builders, secured by ropes, worked suspended in mid-air, hammering and chiseling, carving nearly 3 kilometers of road into the cliff face. Today, as we drive along the cliff, we witness this spectacular "sky road" and remember the sweat and perseverance of our ancestors.
